EQ weblog -- February, 2006

The Second EQ Weblog!!!

I'm Marc, drummer for EQ. I thought the project was brilliant. With EQ we always get to take part in really obscure performances, and this one was no different.

The music-writing began with no film as reference, which was tricky, and meant that we had to change quite a few elements of our music to make it fit. The first time I saw the video I thought it was nothing less than completely surreal, and it was interesting adding the music over it, which again didn't really happen until we were actually in the studio.

Another thing that was interesting was working with Kaffe Mathews. I felt like she took over the rehearsals- and she didn't even formally introduce herself to us. Rehearsals didn't get far if Kaffe was running them and Rob wasn't there.

However, getting to go inside the building site was wicked, and it was a really strange place to set-up our instruments and jam.

The performance was amazing- it certainly stretched me musically. Having to watch the screen and Rob as well as maintaining eye-contact with the other members of the band was intense, let alone having to keep my hands from freezing.

I'm looking forward to taking the material into schools- I think there is a lot of scope for textures focusing on colours (there is a lot of colour in the film). Also, I think the kids would love some electronic hardware to expand their creativity- Kaffe Mathews has already set up an electronic theme in the video so why not take it further? Percussion is also a big must, using scaffolding and other building site sounds. Vocal sounds would be cool for the 'blue angel' section.

Anyway-enough blabber. It's an excellent project to take into schools and I loved every minute of it.
